Honestly, Get Through the Day
Made for Gameheads 👾
This game is based off of Black Cool's Reserve by Helena Andrews. Generationally Black women use a “mask,” a cultivated reservedness, to get through life. Unlike other people and women from different ethnicities, Black women are expected to be strong, level headed and immovable despite if they are in control of the situation or not. Utilizing their mask can be considered a power, but it is also a necessary evil in order to navigate and gain footing in a racist, misogynistic society; but to lose oneself in the facade of constantly “being okay” can be fatal.
I interpreted the essay in this game as a young Black woman who is in between keeping her peace or using her mask to get through the day. Having a support system, your bestie in this game, be a person you can express your unfiltered thoughts to is essential, for me especially, and other Black women throughout history.
